Bad Art Night to take place in Teulon

By Teresa Carey

Fathers Day is right around the corner and perhaps the hard-to-buy-for Dad would like some art this year, a gift which is made all the more meaningful if it is art you have created yourself, right?

‘I’m not an artist’ you might be thinking—but are you sure about that?

Enter the South Interlake Regional Library, Teulon branch. The library will be holding its first ever “Bad Art Night” for anyone aged 12 and up.

“It’s kind of becoming popular on-line, on Pinterest and stuff,” said librarian, Kal Ross, who thought the event would be a good way to promote the library’s extended hours on Tuesdays.

“We’re trying to have more adult programming during that time,” Ross said.

“This is for those people who say they are no good at drawing, or say ‘I’m not creative’. There’s no excuse now,” he said.

A few people have signed up for the class so far, including a local artist who Ross said is not too confident in her abilities.

“Another person said it would be nice to not have any pressure,” he added.

The art class will be taught by the library’s staff and will begin with several examples of bad art. From there, participants will be encouraged to have fun. The session will end at 8 p.m. with a “bad art showcase”.

There is no charge to participate and the library will provide all of the supplies for free. The art medium will be pastels on paper.

“It’s almost an attempt to make a true art piece, but failing,” Ross explained. “I also cannot do art; I’m very well-equipped to teach this class,” he joked.

“We’re hoping that people will leave the art here so we can showcase them for Artist of the Month.”

Ross was doubtful that anyone would be giving their art to their Dads.

“Possibly, but I’m going to say no.”

“Just bring yourself and a good attitude,” Ross said. “We’re hoping to have fun. It’s not a serious night.”

If successful, Bad Art Night will be offered again in the future.

“If it goes well, we usually retry programming,” Ross said.

Bad Art Night will take place on Jun. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. People can register for Bad Art Night by calling the library at (204) 886-3648.
