…Dreamed last ight that I was drawing a picture of Edgar Allen Poe. I had to stop myself from making him look like Dracula. It was a large picture of his face, on white paper. There was black, there was red (around his eyes). I got the face to be a perfect likeness of Poe himself–but it didn’t seem realistic enough. Poe was not Dracula. His writing only gives one the feeling that he was.

I’m in the process of writing an essay on poe’s work. Through this dream I became aware that I’ve been too inclined to equate Poe with his persona.
